Eco-Friendly Bamboo: Supporting Nature's Balance
Built To Last
Bamboo is a durable, sustainable natural material that has a strong life force and will regrow even if it is cut.
Harvested bamboo has been used in a wide range of applications due to its tough yet flexible material, supporting people's lives. In China in particular, processing techniques such as cutting, splitting, bending, weaving and assembling have been particularly well developed, and MUJI's bamboo furniture and woven baskets were created using materials and wisdom rooted in this region.
Responsible Bamboo Harvesting
Bamboo is a natural material with low environmental impact and the ability to absorb carbon dioxide. However, it is also a very resilient material that grows very quickly and will grow back to its original height in just 3 to 5 years even if cut from the root.
If left unattended, it will overgrow and deteriorate the bamboo forest and the surrounding environment, so it is said that appropriate thinning is necessary.
Rather than simply cutting down bamboo, we properly manage only the amount that can maintain the surrounding environment, and find new value in bamboo that would otherwise be thrown away by remaking it into a product.
