AKAMONO USHI

Konosu City, Saitama Prefecture

Kounosu has been known as a town of Hina dolls since the Edo period, and was also one of the major production area of Paulownia wood. The Akamono dolls are made of Shoufunori starch and sawdust produced during the manufacture of drawers and other furniture. After the mixture is moulded into a shape and dried, base coat is applied to the surface, followed by a top coat paint. Red colour is said to ward off evil and the red dolls have been therefore created as symbols for "good health" and "safety of family".
